  • The design challenge for the Himalayan Rocket Stove’s Eco1 was to create an efficient, clean-burning stove suitable for the harsh conditions of the Himalayas. Traditional stoves contribute to deforestation and severe indoor air pollution, endangering health and the environment. The Eco1 had to be affordable, durable, and easy to use, while significantly reducing wood consumption and smoke emissions. It also needed to accommodate the cultural practices and cooking methods of the local communities. Balancing these complex requirements demanded innovative engineering and a deep understanding of user needs to develop a solution that is both sustainable and impactful.

  • The design solution for the Eco1 Rocket Stove involved iterative prototyping and field testing in the Himalayas during winter 2016/17. Initial feedback highlighted issues with stove height and unfamiliar fuel feed methods. In response, the stove was redesigned for a lower height and a traditional wood feed system. Key innovations included preheated airflows, vortex gas flows, and heat-trapping exhaust systems, significantly enhancing efficiency and usability. These changes addressed user comfort and cultural practices, leading to a patented, highly efficient heating and cooking solution that meets the environmental and practical needs of Himalayan communities.

  • The Eco1 Rocket Stove has had a profound impact commercially, environmentally, and socially. Commercially, it has created new market opportunities and employment in manufacturing and distribution. Environmentally, the stove reduces wood consumption by around 50% (as assessed by Gold Standard), significantly decreasing deforestation and carbon emissions. Socially, it improves air quality, reducing respiratory illnesses and impact on snow melt due to Black Carbon. By providing a cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable heating solution, the Eco1 empowers Himalayan communities, promotes environmental conservation, and supports economic development, making it a holistic and impactful innovation.

  • The Eco1 Rocket Stove incorporates key design features that enhance functionality, efficiency, and user-friendliness. Its modular construction allows for easy assembly, disassembly, and maintenance, making it suitable for remote Himalayan communities. The innovative combustion chamber uses preheated primary and secondary airflows and vortex gas flows to achieve complete fuel combustion without moving parts or electrical connections, ensuring reliability in regions with limited power access. The heat-trapping design optimizes heat retention, improving thermal effectiveness. The use of heavy steel smooths out the sharpness of radiant heat typically felt with traditional metal firebox heaters, providing a more comfortable experience. The stove includes a wide base and an easily accessed wood feed system, allowing the cook to sit comfortably and prepare homemade flatbreads (chapati) on the open coals inside the firebox. Its ergonomic design, featuring a lower height, aligns with local cooking practices, ensuring ease of use and cultural acceptance. Materials used in the stove are durable and sourced locally, with manufacturing located as close as possible to the target market. This approach supports regional economies and reduces the environmental footprint of production and distribution.
