Designed for Air New Zealand’s new-generation Boeing 787 fleet, the Familiarisation App is an immersive in-seat experience delivered through high-definition 4K multi-touch IFE screens. It welcomes passengers, educates them on their new seat and cabin, expressing the airline’s core value of Manaakitanga “Taking Care Further than any airline on earth”.

  • In 2020, Air New Zealand committed to a new generation of Boeing 787s to extend flagship routes such as Auckland to New York nonstop. The new aircraft, cabin format and service experience created unique challenges for the airline. Passengers needed education on the new seat designs and capabilities. Longer travel times placed greater demand on IFE as a driver of customer satisfaction. Customers in Premium Economy and Business Premier often hesitate to ask for help, not wanting to appear as naive travellers. IFE engagement was also declining as customers turned to their own devices for content.

  • To answer these challenges, Hangar 22 was created, a skunkworks facility only known to a few within the organisation. Its purpose is to imagine, design, and build the cabin experience of the future. The Familiarisation App was the first product commissioned, central to creating a sense of welcome, belonging, comfort and excitement. Its purpose was to enhance the customer experience through immersive content, reduce anxiety for first-time travellers, orient passengers with the new UI efficiently, differentiate Air New Zealand through exceptional digital craft, connect with travellers emotionally, and demonstrate the value of the new-generation IFE technology.

  • The result is a hyper-personalised experience based on a passenger's specific seat, an orientation app that subtly inspires and teaches passengers about the features of the new seat products, and a traveller who feels welcomed, cared for, and confident. Commercially, it differentiates Air New Zealand on flagship long-haul routes and reaffirms the airline's reputation as a leader in innovation. Operationally, the over-Wi-Fi deployment infrastructure allows the experience to evolve continuously across the fleet without costly hardware updates. Culturally, it expresses Manaakitanga at the scale of every seat, on every aircraft, on every flight.

  • A rigorous design and testing process was created to ensure the product truly met passenger needs. A full-scale cabin mock-up was built in Hangar 22, equipped with the new cabin seat designs and layouts. Replica hardware, featuring fast-touch 4K screens, was installed into the seatbacks. This investment in recreating the cabin environment was essential to accurately test decisions around UI, UX, touch, and gestures. Cabin lighting could be adjusted to reflect the service phases and how colour choices are affected by the environment.Every seat on the aircraft can be customised with unique content depending on its location. Hundreds of production-ready 3D renders were created for every iteration, demonstrating the level of craft and detail required to provide a subtle sense of Manaakitanga. The new IFE platform allows discreet apps to be created and deployed over Wi-Fi whenever an aircraft lands, a brand-new innovation in the industry. This means the Familiarisation App can evolve continuously, with updates pushed across the fleet without physical hardware changes or costly rollouts. The result is an experience that is hyper-personalised, hardware-led, and continuously refined to deepen Air New Zealand's expression of care.
