  • MORE
  • Considering tables have been fashioned since humans lived in caves, the challenge was to design something that had a sense of place and originality while capturing the aesthetic of the design practice. In particular it needed to be commercially viable as a product for the interior design trade and for retail clients alike.

  • One morning on an early walk down to the Blues Point Reserve at McMahon's Point in North Sydney, I saw the sun rising behind the Harbour Bridge. The strength of the bridge's structure was so clear and, in a lightbulb moment, the shape of the arches and the supporting pylons became the inspiration for the Bridge Table. I sketched it from that simple idea and shape. We then developed a 3D model in the studio. From those drawings, sketches and discussions, the first prototype was made.

  • Testing the concept's originality, the design was then successfully registered with IP Australia. Because it is made locally from sustainable timbers, the table has low embodied energy. In line with the philosophy of our practice, it is designed to last. Now, the Bridge Table (available in various lengths and finishes) takes pride of place in our Sydney showroom, is commercially successful and is a cornerstone of our expanding product collection.

  • Design development with the manufacturer helped refine the design and ultimately improve it. In particular, the development of the joint where the arches meet with the crossbar underside the table was critical. The initial concept envisaged the arch and the arm being seperate elements joined individually. Developing the design with the manufacturer resulted in a single joint to enhance the table's structure, strength and stability. This respectful collaboration with makers is an important part of our approach.
