Solgami ALS is a carbon-neutral retrofit solution to reduce the environmental impact of buildings – the largest cause of global carbon emission. Utilising 99%+ post-consumer recycled materials, Solgami mediates internal temperatures whilst controlling internal illumination. Solgami is strategically aligned to assist in achieving Net Zero by 2050 in a difficult-to-abate industry.

  • Solgami ALS confronts the high energy consumption and emissions from building operations, particularly through inefficient building envelopes in existing buildings. In Europe, 220 million, or 75% of existing buildings, are considered energy inefficient. In Australia this percentage is greater. The International Energy Agency states that 20% of all buildings must be renovated by 2030 in order to meet carbon neutrality targets. Solgami enhances thermal regulation and light control using recycled materials. This significantly reduces reliance on energy-intensive HVAC systems and meets diverse needs for illumination and privacy, aligning with global carbon neutrality goals and improving energy efficiency of existing buildings.

  • Solgami ALS tackles the challenge of inefficient energy use in buildings by integrating a carbon-neutral, high-performance window blind made from recycled materials. This solution strategically mediates internal temperatures and controls illumination, balancing energy efficiency with user comfort. Key moments in its development include our testing with the University of Sydney, achieving temperature differentials of internal spaces up to 6degC vs without Solgami, and increasing illumination beyond 0.5m into the room. Solgami was acquired by the Vitra Design Museum in 2024, and has previously been awarded under both the Dyson Innovation Award, and Lexus Design Award.

  • Solgami ALS offers significant commercial, environmental, and societal benefits. Commercially, it appeals to building owners by reducing HVAC costs, with a calculated payback period of 3 years. Environmentally, it lowers carbon emissions and energy consumption by enhancing building envelope efficiency using recycled materials. Societally, it improves occupant comfort and health through better thermal and light control, contributing to greener building practices. These impacts position Solgami ALS as a pioneering solution in the movement toward sustainable urban development and Net Zero Emissions, fostering a healthier relationship between built environments and natural ecosystems.

  • Sustainable Materials: The use of 99%+ post-consumer recycled materials is fundamental to Solgami’s design. This includes plastics, aluminium, and magnets from end-of-life water tanks, pipes and electronic devices, showcasing a commitment to reducing waste and promoting circular economy principles. Advanced Thermal and Light Management: Solgami ALS reflects infrared and UV radiation whilst providing an insulative sealed air pocket, this creates a comfortable environment that reduces the reliance on energy-intensive heating and AC systems. Additionally, it offers precise control over the amount of natural light entering the space, enhancing illumination while minimising glare and heat gain. Customisation: Solgami ALS is designed for its end user, recognising the diversity in building orientations, locations, and user needs. This adaptability ensures that each installation maximises energy efficiency and user comfort. Scalability and Economic Viability: Designed with mass production in mind, Solgami ALS bridges the gap between bespoke architectural solutions and large-scale marketability. This approach not only makes sustainable building upgrades accessible but also economically viable, promising a significant return on investment through energy savings. Integration with Green Ratings: Solgami ALS supports enhanced building ratings such as Greenstar or LEED, helping property owners improve their building’s environmental credentials and increase its market value.
