sMove: An Access System

sMove was developed for climate-driven, year-round access needs across outdoor destinations and urban venues, where diverse users and gear must share one entrance. The primary challenge was a comfortable, user-friendly gate for everyone that still provides the barrier operators require and security in harsh outdoor conditions. A compact modular layout shifts quickly between separated lanes and a wide inclusive passage, reducing the need for additional gates. The compliant WAVE folds into an X for clear signaling, yields on contact, and—together with radar-based detection and contactless credential options—keeps flow smooth and injury-free while concealing complex technology in a robust housing.

The solution is a modular gate architecture built from two opposing single gates and a center column, enabling the layout to switch between separated lanes and one wide, inclusive passage through a simple reconfiguration. A folding WAVE barrier was shaped as a compliant mechanism: it forms an X as a clear stop cue, retracts to “disappear” when access is granted, and yields if a person or object is in the passage. Radar sensing and multiple credential options are integrated into the housing to maintain smooth flow while keeping the hardware compact and protected.
