  • Retail Loss Prevention is traditionally addressed through cumbersome add-on security devices that disrupt product visibility, create operational inefficiencies and introduce friction at the point of purchase. Brands and retailers face increasing pressure to reduce theft without compromising customer experience and product presentation. Yet existing loss prevention solutions often negatively impact purchase outcomes and brand perception. Collaborating with 10 international retailers across grocery, pharmacy, liquor and hardware, the project sought to develop an intuitive, unobtrusive and scalable system to protect diverse high-value, high-risk products without compromising shopability. Ultimately defining a new category of in-store loss prevention: Fixture Protection.

  • Reduced sales from behind-counter or lock-box solutions defined 'product access' as a key objective. The need for a customer-operated physical barrier solution without locks, power or staff-intervention led to ShelfGuard’s fixture-integrated sliding-panel system. Access to single-facings prevents shelf sweep while maintaining genuine customer access to product. In-store behavioural studies identified an audible ‘click’ at fixture interaction as a theft deterrent, alerting nearby staff to high-risk activity while reducing direct staff intervention and exposure to theft-related conflict. Feedback established a hinged-frame requirement for rapid FMCG restocking. ShelfGuard fundamentally reframes Loss Prevention by removing friction between customer and product without compromising security.

  • Retail theft has increased by more than 25% over the past decade, with genuine customers increasingly locked out of everyday products and store teams more frequently required to intervene in theft-related incidents. ShelfGuard enables retailers to confidently return high-risk products to the shelf without compromising stock loss or staff safety. Grounded in retail behavioural research, the fixture-integrated system shifts industry standards away from reactive product-mounted security devices toward customer-first loss prevention. ShelfGuard’s fixture-level approach challenges traditional product-level afterthoughts, supporting evolving planograms and SKU flexibility, and defining a new category of loss prevention whereby the fixture itself becomes the security infrastructure.

  • Early-stage research identified that traditional loss prevention devices often prioritise restriction over customer access, treating every interaction as a potential theft event. Locked cabinets, product tagging and behind-counter storage increase staff involvement for product access, discouraging spontaneous purchase and interrupting how customers typically interact with FMCG. This tension between theft reduction and sales performance defined the need for protection to exist at fixture level within the store. In-store trials identified that maintaining direct customer access to products on shelf, without requiring staff intervention or disrupting the customer path-to-purchase, was critical to preserving normal retail behaviour. Unlike traditional loss prevention products that obscure branding and packaging, ShelfGuard maintains clear product visibility and open shelf presentation through mechanically controlled single-facing access. Operating as part of the retail fixture allows consistent product protection across multiple categories, SKUs and planograms without requiring product-specific hardware, power or repeated fixture replacement over time. The hinged frame assembly enables rapid bulk restocking using existing product merchandising workflows, eliminating a common operational inefficiency associated with locked cabinets and product-tagging devices. ShelfGuard’s results challenge the growing retail reliance on restricted product access in response to theft, enabling high-risk products to return to shelf without compromising security or buyer behaviour.
