MASS is a sculptural table lamp for ambient illumination, exploring volume, weight, and materiality through bold intersecting forms. Made in Australia from sustainably sourced Walnut or 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE, it brings together refined craftsmanship and sustainable design thinking.

  • CHALLENGE
  • SOLUTION
  • IMPACT
  • MORE
  • The challenge was to create a lighting piece that felt monolithic yet minimal - an object as much about form as function. It had to be manufactured locally, using sustainable materials, and suit small production runs without compromising finish quality. Achieving consistency across two very different materials - solid timber and recycled plastic - required careful consideration, particularly in machining tolerances, structural stability, and surface detailing. The aim was to avoid traditional lighting tropes and instead create a grounded, sculptural object with a quiet presence and no visible fixings.

  • MASS was developed through an iterative prototyping process using CNC-machined laminated timber blocks and recycled plastic sheets to achieve bold, intersecting geometries. The Walnut version uses sustainably sourced timber, with grain direction and detail carefully considered before machining to maintain visual continuity across the form. The recycled plastic version is made from 100% post-consumer waste, pressed into durable sheets before being CNC-machined into components, which are then stacked and mechanically fixed. Both versions conceal the electrical components within the body and feature a standard E27 LED globe with an inline switch, offering soft, ambient illumination.

  • MASS repositions lighting as both functional object and sculptural artefact - designed to endure, not follow trends. It is produced in small batches using either recycled or sustainably sourced materials. The Walnut version is crafted in Melbourne, supporting local makers and responsible forestry. The recycled plastic version is manufactured in Sydney using 100% post-consumer waste diverted from landfill and marine environments, transforming plastic into long-lasting, meaningful products. Together, both models support a low-waste production model while minimising emissions from offshore manufacturing. Commercially, MASS resonates with interior designers and design-conscious consumers seeking sustainable, expressive lighting solutions.

  • MASS is a sculptural table lamp that treats light as both function and form. Its intersecting, monolithic geometries give the piece a grounded architectural quality, setting it apart from conventional lighting. The lamp is available in two distinct material expressions - sustainably sourced Walnut and 100% post-consumer recycled plastic - each highlighting a different approach to form, tactility, and sustainability. The timber version is carefully laminated and machined to preserve grain flow across curved surfaces, while the recycled plastic version is pressed into dense sheets, CNC-machined, and assembled from stacked components. Both designs conceal their electrical fittings, allowing the form to speak without distraction. An E27 LED globe provides ambient illumination, while the compact footprint and solid build make MASS suitable for both residential and commercial interiors. Designed and made in Australia in small batches, each lamp embodies a commitment to material integrity, simplicity, and low-waste production.
