Latitude 16 Organic Gin – a bespoke glass bottle and integrated packaging system for Coast Distillery, deliberately designed to live on as a decorative and functional water bottle. L16° transports the drinker to the Barrier Reef at 16° south, its sculpted glass form and light-reactive printed finish evoking a tidal cay.

  • Coast Distillery entered an oversaturated premium gin category as first-time distillers, needing a debut package that signalled organic credentials and a specific coastal origin without resorting to category clichés. The brief required more than surface styling: a commercially manufacturable glass form distinctive enough to own shelf, paired with a light-reactive label system that could survive automated bottling and retail handling while conveying the optical feeling of standing on a tidal cay. Small-batch artisanal aesthetics had to be reconciled with the engineering realities of section-mould glassmaking, a constrained 50 × 40 mm label zone, and national launch timelines.

  • Three specialist practices were engaged in deliberate sequence: Vert Design developed the bottle architecture, Clay Andrews designed the graphic and finish system, and MCC Labels executed print production. Vert developed a CAD-generated, algorithmically randomised surface topography tessellating from base to shoulder, paired with a blue-green glass melt chosen after extensive colour-trial rounds. Andrews engineered a light-reactive print stack - foil stamping, relief emboss, micro-screenwork and gradient inks - on a specialty substrate with no prior proof in the local supply chain. A graduated ocean-to-sand neck label completes the system. Production feasibility was proven through iterative mould trials and pre-launch validation.

  • Within its launch period, L16° has won Gold at the World Brand Design Society Awards, a Black Mark for Best Creative Work of the Year, and a Merit Award at The Dieline Awards - unusually high critical validation for a first-release. Commercially, the vessel has secured premium shelf placement and delivered Coast Distillery the debut positioning required to enter the national market. Environmentally, elimination of secondary packaging, recyclable glass and a biodegradable closure reduce per-unit material footprint against category norms. Culturally, it redirects coastal-spirits design away from representational motifs toward experiential, sensorial design language - a replicable model for regional producers.

  • A custom bottle melt in a subtle blue-green tint, specified after extensive colour-trial rounds, gives the glass its place-specific signature. The exterior carries a CAD-generated surface topography: undulating waveforms, randomised to feel organic and non-repeating, transitioning from pronounced relief at the base to a quieter surface at the shoulder. These undulations double as a natural pouring grip. The base carries a load-bearing embossed ring that stabilises the vessel for high-speed filling lines and imprints the 16° latitude marker and brand URL, designed so condensation runoff leaves a transient water-print on the surface below. A natural blonde beechwood closure provides tactile warmth at the neck. On the constrained 50 × 40 mm body label, Clay Andrews and MCC Labels engineered a light-reactive print stack of foil-stamped elements, relief-embossed surface detail, fine-line screenwork and gradient inks that visually shifts as the bottle is rotated. A graduated ocean-to-sand wash on the neck label completes the system. Supplier coordination (international and Australian specialists) was managed as a single production pipeline to preserve colour, finish and engineering fidelity end-to-end. The bottle is deliberately designed to live on after the spirit is consumed, its form, weight and finish making it a functional and decorative water bottle.
