Koala Paddington Bed Base

Customer need statement: "I need a bed frame that offers ultimate comfort, while I can store pillows and organise my cables." The focus was to improve the pain points of existing bed bases and to allow a user to create a space that feels comfortable but also functional. Offering a bed base that enables comfort while sleeping and sitting - as the bed becomes a multipurpose place. The materials used also required to be sustainable. All these needs had to be met within Koala's business model to offer easy, tool-free assembly and fast, free delivery.

Through ethnographic research, we identified people are spending more time in bed, working, or reading. This requires a base that offers ultimate comfort sleeping and sitting. Customers are looking for a stylish design while choosing a product with a reduced footprint. The idea was to combine the softness and comfort of an upholstered bed base with the visually lighter timber frame construction. Panel-slats provide a solid platform for the best performance of any mattress. The upholstered, 4° angled bedhead is ideal to lean up against. Through rapid iterative testing we achieved a simple assembly and thoughtful product experience.

Commercially, these products have given Koala increasing authority within the bedroom as Koala is extending their bedroom range to serve different consumer needs. The bed base has proven to be another product adapting to consumers ever-changing needs and lifestyle habits. Sustainability is embedded in our material strategy and finding the right material for the Paddington Bed Base took extensive research and coordination. The timber used is FSC® certified timber. The fabric used contains 33% REPREVEⓇ yarn which is made from recycled polyester, including recycled plastic bottles. This means that the Paddington Bed Base uses 28.5 bottles per bed base.

All timber used on the Paddington Bed Base is certified FSC® so that we can ensure that timber is sourced from legal plantations. High upholstered cushioned bedhead has enough height to convey a feeling of grand proportion with sophisticated understatement, ensuring there can be sofa style comfort while sitting in bed reading or working. Panel slats have become a primary differentiator and are Koala's answer to flimsy slats offering confidence and best performance for any mattress. Behind headboard storage allows you to store unused pillows or charge your phone on the shelf behind the headboard, including cable management holes for added accessibility. Cushioned Platform Surround means upholstered side rails to help eliminate painful shins or other pain points when you hit the side in the middle of the night. Under storage provides a light and airy feel, making a great spot for additional storage and easy to vacuum under. All of this with quick assembly and no tools required for setup, making it accessible to everybody with minimal fuss.
