FEAST is an education program that embodies OzHarvest’s vision to build a world with zero food waste and free of hunger. It educates kids about food waste awareness and healthy eating and, more importantly, it aspires to champion a generation of Australian children to be change makers in the community.

  • I was commissioned by OzHarvest to bring the FEAST program to life by creating its identity, illustrating all the teacher and student resources and designing the marketing collateral. The brief was to keep the core elements of the OzHarvest masterbrand whilst making it appealing to kids. The design had to be fun, engaging and easy to understand, to cater for students of all learning stages and abilities and who often don't have English as their first language. The design had to be inexpensive to implement and work across print and digital, adapting to the available resources in each school.

  • The solution was to add colour and facial expressions (universal forms of communication) to the OzHarvest’s existing black and yellow colour palette and simplistic iconography style. In line with research that showed that characters make learning more engaging, I created 5 characters inspired by top foods that go to waste in Australia, each representing one of the 5 food groups that the students would learn about: meats, dairy, fruit, grains and vegetables. The characters guide the students through the activities, making the learnings more fun and relatable.

  • “Whilst food rescue fills bellies, education can transform lives,” says OzHarvest Founder Ronni Kahn. “Children are the future to saving the planet and FEAST is about inspiring them to make a difference.” The initiative extends Kahn’s ambitious goal to help the government halve Australia’s $20 billion annual food waste by 2030. FEAST has been recognised by the Global Compact Network Australia (with support of the Australian Government) as a program addressing the following United Nation Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Climate Action, Partnerships for the Goals, Responsible Consumption and Production.

  • “It’s rare for education material to be engaging and easy to use for both teachers and students, whilst communicating a strong education message in fun way! The FEAST design ticks all the boxes and has received very positive feedback, which has contributed greatly to the overall success of the program.” Amelia Berner – OzHarvest FEAST Program Manager
