After 35 years successfully designing, manufacturing and installing spiral stair systems, enzie developed their own ‘Miraculous Staircase’. Resilient, sculptural, ergonomic, long-lasting and locally sourced/made, enzie’s Helical Stair incorporates features of the Spiral system into a high-quality pre-fabricated structure, with revolutionary rapid-on-site installation, immediate usage and expansive architectural scope.

  • Helical stairs were normally constructed and installed on site, where time and space is premium and costly. enzie’s Helical Stair was developed to respond to, and solve, those issues. The challenge was to design a new system which allowed for pre-made modular components to be fabricated, off-site, to facilitate a high-quality finish and a shorter timeline. We developed a structural system, then, using CAD, opened up a wide range of optional designs at a very low cost, through automated manufacturing. This approach in a wide range of applications reduces cost and offers multiple advantages for the Australian building industry.

  • Development of the enzie Helical Stair was a project we worked on for more than 10 years, plus five more finessing to complete satisfaction. The structural challenge was our first obstacle. traditional Helical stairs had continuous structural members for support, whereas we designed a modular construction with integrated self-supporting assembly. Earlier attempts failed because of too much deflection then later pro- types failed because of the lack of continuity and appearance. The design solution was a combination of CAD and laser cutting technology. With both accuracy and economy, we achieved structural strength and the smooth finish that was required.

  • Visually, the design impact of a Helical stair is apparent. Singularly designed to suit the space, function and client taste, its sculptural form is a piece of art. Installed, the structure offers longterm value and absolute safety, joy and ease of use. Requiring no maintenance, it can be re-customised (balustrade, treads and colour) and potentially re-used. Made from 100% recyclable steel, precision cut in the factory to ensure superior quality and zero waste, the Helical stair has more flexibility in terms of height, width and overall scale, allowing for more opportunity for application, diversity and service.

  • Designing a modular structure that is pre-made in a factory and easily transported in the back of a ute, liberates a wide range of options architecturally - increasing possibilities in regards to size and height while reducing the need for cranes and access provisions onsite. To further ensure the stair’s effectiveness and ease of instalment, we also developed a modular balustrade system to meet the structural design and efficiency of rapid installation. The Helical Stair is made from 100% recyclable steel which is entirely Australian sourced. The parts are all made locally in our Melbourne factory, utilising zero waste technology. The precise laser cutting machine ensures optimal material use and minimal wastage. The efficiency of materials and considered design also reduces unnecessary weight and a typical structure weighs around 600kg. The stair provides longterm value as well as joy and ease of use. Quality is a priority and is guaranteed, so there are no ongoing demands for structural maintenance. The stair also provides longevity and versatility; once installed, it can be refurbished, modernised, or restyled without the need to demolish and replace the entire structure, increasing its useful life and avoiding land fill.
