EnergyFlex is a free digital platform designed to make Australia’s energy system transparent and accessible for electricity consumers. Through human-centred design, complex energy data is transformed into simple insights and behavioural guidance that help households, renters and businesses optimise energy use, reduce costs and actively participate in the energy transition.

  • Australia’s electricity system is increasingly complex as renewable generation, dynamic pricing and electrification accelerate. Yet most consumers have little visibility or understanding of when energy is cheapest, cleanest or most valuable to use.The challenge was to translate complex energy data, including tariffs, consumption patterns and renewable availability, into a simple experience that enables consumers to make informed decisions. This required addressing entrenched energy behaviours formed under historically predictable electricity supply. The solution needed to operate without new hardware, integrate with existing infrastructure, remain independent of retailers, and support households, renters, businesses and communities seeking to reduce costs and emissions.

  • EnergyFlex translates complex energy data into simple measurement and guidance for electricity consumers. Integration with Australia’s Consumer Data Right enables automatic retrieval of smart meter data, eliminating manual bill processing and ensuring accurate insights.A design challenge was transforming tariffs, consumption patterns and renewable generation signals into experiences people could easily understand and act on. Behavioural design principles help users shift habits formed under historically predictable electricity supply.Keeping the platform free for consumers was a roadblock and successfully addressed through B-B-C partnership-based revenue models. For the first time, the EnergyFlex Rating measures consumer renewable energy performance out of five.

  • EnergyFlex helps electricity consumers measure their energy performance, reduce costs, lower emissions and better understand how their homes interact with the electricity system. Households typically save $500–$1,000 per year by identifying better electricity plans and shifting consumption to lower-cost periods. Behaviour changes supported by the platform can also reduce household carbon emissions by around one tonne per year.Beyond individual savings, EnergyFlex improves energy literacy and participation across communities. The EnergyFlex Rating translates complex energy data into a simple performance score, helping consumers understand which actions have the greatest impact and make confident decisions in an increasingly dynamic electricity system.

  • • Secure data integration – EnergyFlex connects to consumer energy data through Australia’s Consumer Data Right, enabling continuous monitoring and eliminating manual bill uploads.• Consumer-controlled data sharing – Users can choose to share their EnergyFlex data profile with trusted organisations in exchange for services, programs or benefits. • EnergyFlex Rating – The EnergyFlex Rating condenses complex household energy performance into a simple five-point score, helping users quickly understand how effectively their energy use aligns with cost and renewable generation.• Tariff Tracer and plan comparison – The platform dynamically analyses tariff structures and compares electricity plans using actual household consumption data, enabling users to identify overspend and better energy plans with confidence.• Bills tracking and carbon insights – Historical bill data and electricity consumption are translated into cost insights and estimated carbon emissions, helping households understand both financial and environmental impacts.• Multi-property management – Users can monitor multiple properties within a single account, supporting households, landlords, businesses and organisations.• Groups and community insights – Organisations and communities can create groups to view aggregated energy and carbon insights across participating members.• Rewards and engagement tools – Incentives, vendor offers and educational prompts encourage ongoing participation and help users identify practical actions to improve energy outcomes.
