Grab rails are the most used supportive bathroom product but their generic ‘institutional’ design results in a hesitation and social stigma towards their inclusion in domestic bathroom design. The Urbane II Universal Accessories challenge the traditional typology of the grab rails, providing a high-level of aesthetic refinement as well as providing customisable solutions that focus on the individual’s needs both in a functional and visual capacity. Aligning the design aesthetic to the existing and highly popular, Caroma Urbane II Bathroom Collection, reduces social stigma and normalises bathroom supports as a practical and valued additional to the bathroom.

The primary function of grab rails is to provide secure support, ensuring they can withstand the forces of human interaction while meeting grip and transition requirements. Through rigorous engineering and product testing, we developed a compact mounting solution exceeding the industry standard (AS1428.1-2009) requirement of 1100N force. Additionally, we collaborated with a co-design group of 10 Australians aged 65+ and key health and aged care experts to create a rail profile that not only enhances grip and ease of movement but also breaks away from the traditional ‘institutional’ tubular design, offering a more visually refined and user-friendly solution.
