Australian parents face a daily dilemma: a bicycle helmet offers no sun protection for the face, neck, and ears, while a broad-brimmed sun hat offers no impact protection. Attempting to wear a hat under a helmet compromises the helmet's fit and safety certification. Existing brims are often clumsy, visually unappealing to children, or pose snagging hazards that can cause neck injuries during a fall. The challenge was to engineer a unified product that meets strict CPSC and EN1078 impact standards, provides Cancer Council-approved UV protection, and features a brim system that is safe, intuitive, and desirable for children to wear

LUMIS integrates a 7.5cm UPF 50+ woven polyester brim that attaches to the base of a premium EPS/Polycarbonate helmet shell using a proprietary Magnetic Snap-Brim System. Eight calibrated neodymium magnets allow the brim to snap on or off in two seconds with one hand. Crucially, the magnetic connection is engineered to release at 8N of force—well below the neck injury threshold—eliminating the snagging hazard of fixed brims. The brim sits below the CPSC 105° peripheral vision arc, ensuring unobstructed sightlines. When not in use, the brim folds flat into a carabiner pouch.

Commercially, LUMIS creates a new hybrid category in the $1.2B global kids' helmet market. Societally, it directly addresses Australia's high skin cancer rates by ensuring children receive comprehensive UV protection during outdoor play without compromising head safety. Environmentally, the modular design means a damaged brim can be replaced without discarding the entire helmet.
