The goal was to rethink the classic stool and chair by bringing in a sense of personality and playfulness, all without compromising functionality. Designed to seamlessly move between formal and casual settings, meeting the needs of today’s flexible spaces. The pieces needed to be durable enough for commercial environments yet still feel inviting in residential ones. The Bobby Collection was also designed to be a staple in the range which meant the design needed to balance form, materials and construction to achieve high versatility at the same time as catering for varying budgets.

Bobby combines industrial design principles with furniture-making techniques, a product that balances aesthetics and functionality. The design process involved extensive prototyping to refine the form and ensure structural integrity. The signature curved handle provides functionality and establishes a unique visual identity. Offering indoor and outdoor materials allows Bobby to suit any space. The design offers a minimal yet robust aesthetic with multiple uses, price points and materials to cater to small or large budgets. To allow flexibility for our client’s timeframes and creativity, Bobby is available in various standard stocked colourways with custom colours and seat pads available.

The Bobby Collection balances sustainable materials with thoughtful design. FSC timber ensures responsible sourcing while aluminium offers lightweight durability and an accessible price point. The metal indoor-outdoor Bobby pieces, allows the design to be simply refreshed with different powder coat colours without expending resources changing core manufacturing processes. Each product is part of DesignByThem’s stewardship program — At the end of its useful life, customers can return the chair to us for repair, reuse, or recycling. If repair is not possible, we strive to recycle or reuse as much of the product as possible, minimising material waste and reducing landfill contribution.
