  • Typically designed for mainstream broadcasters, live production chains consisting of separate rack-mounted switcher ‘processing-brain’ and ‘control panel’ are large, complex and expensive. Often costing in excess of $20,000, they are virtually inaccessible to all but the most well resourced facilities. It was clear independent creators required an affordable, yet professional alternative that would enhance the production values of their live streaming content with multi-camera switching technology typically only found in mainstream broadcasts. In the wake of COVID-19 and social distancing measures designed to suppress its spread, the ability to meet this challenges would prove exceedingly important.

  • For a fraction of the cost of traditional switchers at $295, the unassuming design of ATEM Mini belies its revolutionary nature. Combining a fully-featured broadcast switcher ‘processing brain’ and ‘control panel’ in an ultra-compact, lightweight enclosure it can be used almost anywhere, allowing real-time control of up to four HDMI video sources. Typically, multiple crew members are required to execute a professional multi-camera live broadcast. With large source buttons the ATEM Mini can be used by feel alone, allowing a single presenter to switch cameras discretely, even during a face-to-face interview.

  • The impact of ATEM Mini, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannot be understated. Inexpensive, powerful and easy to use, it has enabled mainstream broadcasters to react quickly, with presenters setting up home studios to continue producing professional content indistinguishable from regular programming. Medical facilities, universities and schools are leveraging ATEM Mini and Blackmagic cameras to facilitate safe, on-going education, broadcasting of surgical procedures, lectures and demonstrations to off-campus students. It has also ensured the survival of many small businesses, allowing owners to maintain on-going engagement with customers who are no longer able to interact with physically.

  • ATEM Mini enables real-time switching. With up to 4 HDMI inputs multiple camera angles can be set up for more engaging live streaming to social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook Live and TwitchTV. By connecting an input to a computer, users can also switch between powerPoint slide shows, video clip playback, websites or gaming footage. Rich, professional, multi-layered audio is also possible with ATEM Mini, with up to four audio signals from each HDMI source and two 3.5mm inputs allowing additional microphones for the presenter and a guest. The back-lit, hierarchical control layout is logically organised into clear functional groups: Video and audio Input control buttons on the left; transitions, effects, streaming and recording functions on the right. This includes: - Switching - Audio monitoring - Transitions - Digital Video Effects (DVE) To access deeper functionality, users can operate ATEM Mini from a computer using the free ATEM Control software, whose interface is specifically designed for speed and accuracy. This enables users to switch video sources live, load media pools with graphics, use transitions, change settings and mix audio. For larger crews working on major live productions, multiple copies of the software enable multiple people to work simultaneously.
