The b.box Weaning Spoon Set is a purpose-built collection of utensils designed to guide children and parents through every stage of introducing solids. Each spoon is designed for a specific developmental milestone, building the fine and gross motor skills children need to achieve feeding independence.

  • The baby feeding category is dominated by products that frequently cause gagging, lack mouth guards and take little account of how children learn to eat. They’re often sold in multi-piece sets of the same spoon. What’s missing was a set designed around the transitionary steps of introducing solids, across food textures and developing skill sets to develop feeding independence with utensils for each stage. The market is competitive on price, with legacy brands setting a bar for affordability. A range that is user centric, that re-imagined feeding independence, using quality materials like silicone, while commercially competitive was a central challenge.

  • Observation of how children learn to eat revealed a gap, most products were iterations of the same conventional spoon, disconnected from developing motor skills. When holding a utensil for the first time the innate action is not to scoop, but to dip. The critical design decision was to abandon the assumption that a spoon must look like a spoon. The solution was three purpose-built utensils, each addressing a developmental stage. A non-directional dipping tool for early exploration, a dual sided spoon for scooping as a stepping stone to cutlery, and a parent spoon designed for accompanying the feeding experience.

  • The b.box Weaning Spoon Set shifts mealtime to a shared, developmental experience. By equipping children with purpose-built tools at each stage of their feeding journey and exposure to different textured and consistency foods, the set supports the growing movement toward child led feeding. This builds motor skills through daily use and practice while making mealtime inclusive.Designed for longevity using steriliser safe and soft silicone and polypropylene, the set is built to serve multiple children within a family which reduces waste. Commercially, it delivers a globally viable, affordably priced product that expands the b.box feeding range with genuine purpose.

  • The baby dipper incorporates a non-directional ellipsoid-head with grooves that retain purees more effectively than competitor dipper spoons. It doesn’t matter which way it is placed in the child’s mouth reducing barriers to self-feeding. This makes each attempt at eating more successful. It also assists in transitioning a child from a suckling pattern to a more sustained bite as advised by Occupational Therapist review. The baby spoon introduces a flatter design which teaches directionality of objects and encourages using lips to pull off food. It has deep grooves along its edge that also holds puree and starts to teach scooping and balancing of food. The adult spoon has refined ergonomics to make feeding easier, as well as a purpose-built head that reduces over feeding. It incorporates a small foot, keeping the head off any surface it sits on improving hygiene. A key feature is the over moulding of food safe silicone onto a polypropylene core. Silicone and polypropylene don’t naturally bond, and achieving this through a combination of injection moulding and liquid moulding silicone required collaboration with a specialist manufacturer. The result, a product that captures the properties of both materials. The softness of silicone and the affordability of polypropylene.
