  • CHALLENGE
  • SOLUTION
  • IMPACT
  • In considering this product there were 5 design challenges we identified that needed to be addressed: 1.Mealtime mess – kids love to throw their plates (and food) on the floor 2.Being able to accommodate different foods and preferences – from fussy eaters that don’t like their foods touching to fitting a whole sandwich (including the crust!) 3.Ease of cleaning 4.Recyclability – Avoid co-moulding with TPE or TPU 5.Durability – A long lasting functional product

  • Addressing the brief, we designed the following: •The robust suction cup means the plate stays in place, without sliding, and helps with mealtime mess •The overhang on the divider helps guide food onto utensils and minimise spills. •A modular design with a removable divider and suction cup means the plate can accommodate different foods from fruit and purees to large sandwiches or pancakes, growing with the child. •All parts can be separated to make it easy to clean. •Parts can be replaced and recycled, unlike co-moulded plastics. •The materials chosen are durable and will maintain function for a long time.

  • Although silicone cannot be recycled, its durability makes it far longer lasting and easier to clean than competitor co-moulded products, which use materials that slowly deteriorate with use. Its modular design enables the plate to adjust to a child’s growth, accommodating suction, non-suction, divided, and non-divided configurations in one product. This versatility significantly reduces material usage and end-of-life impacts, making it a more sustainable solution. Thus, using a single product that adapts to a child’s evolving needs is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and socially beneficial.
