The design challenge for the Aqara U300 Smart Lock was to create a highly secure, aesthetically pleasing, and easy-to-install smart lock that could retrofit onto existing door levers—eliminating the need for door modifications. The team had to integrate multiple access methods (fingerprint, keypad, smartphone, Apple Home Key) into a compact form while maintaining a minimalist design suited to modern Australian homes. Key challenges included ensuring battery longevity, seamless smart home compatibility, and overcoming space constraints within the lock’s hardware. The U300 successfully met these demands, delivering a versatile, user-friendly solution that blends advanced functionality with stylish, intuitive design.

The Aqara U300 Smart Lock solves the challenge by offering a retrofit solution that works with most existing door levers—avoiding the need to replace or drill doors. The design process focused on user convenience, security, and visual harmony with modern home aesthetics. Early prototypes were too bulky, leading to a complete internal motor and battery layout redesign to achieve a slim, elegant profile. Integrating Apple Home Key presented compatibility hurdles, which were overcome through close collaboration with Apple and rigorous testing. The Aqara U300 Smart Lock delivers a significant impact by making smart security accessible, stylish, and easy to install. Commercially, it opens new markets by supporting retrofit installations without specialist tools. Environmentally, it extends the life of existing doors and hardware, reducing waste.
