STORYBOX is a mobile digital exhibitions platform designed to enliven public imagination, storytelling and creativity in shared spaces. It serves cultural institutions, councils, universities, artists and communities as a civic storytelling asset, while engaging public audiences as citizen-storytellers, not consumers, making places not just liveable but loveable.

  • Most digital screens in public space are designed for advertising, engaging audiences as consumers, not citizens. At the same time, placemaking programs struggle to demonstrate their cultural and civic value in ways that are visible, credible and repeatable. The project had to reverse this default by designing a resilient, transportable digital exhibitions platform that could shift the screen from passive advertising surface to shared civic storytelling asset, while withstanding Australia's weather extremes, supporting multi-partner programming across diverse sites, and capturing public-space impact credibly without commercial tracking. Meeting this required new partnerships with cultural, First Nations and community storytellers.

  • STORYBOX launched in 2020 to address precincts undergoing rapid transformation, built on a place-first principle: cultural programming leads, technology enables. The first 2.2m four-sided LED cube was refined through iterative co-development with partners. Recognising that citizens want to be seen and heard in their own places, the platform evolved ongoing participatory interfaces that let them publish directly to the screen. Roadblocks included balancing standardised hardware with diverse partner needs and resisting commercial tracking to preserve a privacy-safe model. By 2026, the platform now supports custom partner dashboards, digital storywalls and a Civic AI evaluation frameworks.

  • STORYBOX takes a care-full approach to designing digital engagement in public spaces. It doesn't primarily harvest attention, instead it invites collaboration. Across 25 precincts and 50+ partner programs since 2020, public-space evaluation consistently records a 66% audience notice rate, 82% preferring spaces with STORYBOX over without, and 83% recommending the program to others. The award-winning Birds of Australia STORYBOX (Australian Museum, 2023–2025) captured 65,000 pedestrian counts and 88.9% audience satisfaction across regional NSW touring sites, demonstrating clear touring value to the museum. Through cultural partnerships STORYBOX has activated investments in 40+ artists, 150+ community storytellers and 20 community groups.

  • STORYBOX's defining feature is not the digital cube alone but the fusion of platform, program and participation. When engaged by place custodians it invites artists, communities, institutions and cultural partners to collaborate to bring story, culture and dialogue into public space. The four-sided LED interface breaks the single-user broadcast model and supports 360-degree, simultaneous public encounter, enabling cinematic storytelling, touring exhibitions, mobile-to-screen interaction, live polling and dance interactives such as the work co-created with Cao Fei for the Art Gallery of NSW (Darling Harbour, 2025).Behind the public experience is a flexible technical system: cloud publishing across sites, the STORYBOX Mobile Webapp with dynamic page refreshes, QR-based interaction, gestural dance moves and a MoodRing web app for real-time sentiment capture for partners. STORYBOX is also designed for long-term reuse: a shared-asset model that lets programming be reworked, toured and adapted across communities, extending the value of public investment. Privacy-safe LORA WAN people-counting captures activity without collecting personal data, and the Civic AI evaluation framework provides standardised reach, engagement and participation metrics across deployments.
