  • CHALLENGE
  • SOLUTION
  • IMPACT
  • MORE
  • The challenge was to make CPR and first aid training deployable anywhere in Australia, and globally, without the cost and logistics burden of traditional manikins. Existing systems are bulky, expensive and costly to ship. The brief was to create a compact, affordable solution for remote delivery that could simulate baby and adult CPR in one product, while using accessories to support first aid training. The final design exceeded that brief, delivering a durable product that can be reused, refurbished and fully recycled.

  • Design Anthology developed ERS as a compact training system made from polypropylene core flute, selected after testing cardboard, foam and other constructions. The material provides structure, durability and spring behaviour, allowing one product to simulate baby and adult CPR while supporting first aid training through accessories. ERS also acts as the box for the wider kit, organising contents while reducing packaging, freight and material use. Through concept development, prototyping and a 200-unit pilot run, the design was refined into a reusable, manufacturable solution for remote training.

  • ERS expands access to life-saving CPR and first aid training by making remote delivery more practical, affordable and scalable. Socially, it improves access for regional, remote and underserved users who may otherwise face significant travel barriers. Commercially, it reduces freight, travel and hardware costs while enabling training providers to deliver remote competency assessment more efficiently. Environmentally, ERS uses recyclable polypropylene, reduces packaging and shipping volume by combining product and pack, and extends product life through reuse, refurbishment and redistribution. Together, these outcomes strengthen both sustainability and long-term market viability

  • ERS is a purpose-built system for remote CPR and first aid training that brings product, packaging and kit organisation into one compact design. Instead of requiring a separate case or container, the product itself becomes the structural pack, holding and organising additional training items while also functioning as the CPR training surface. This reduces freight volume, part count, packaging waste and setup complexity. Made from polypropylene core flute, ERS uses one material to provide structure, hinge movement and spring behaviour, creating a lightweight, durable and fully recyclable solution with realistic compression response. It enables both baby and adult CPR simulation in a single product, while accessories extend training to AED, EpiPen, spacer/inhaler and asthma puffer scenarios. Clear printed graphics support intuitive assembly and deployment. Compact, easy to store and designed to be reused, refurbished and redeployed, ERS exceeded the original single-use brief and offers a credible, scalable alternative to bulky, expensive traditional training systems.
