  • Traditional relief staffing relied on fragmented workflows, consultant-led coordination and limited transparency for educators, creating delays and uncertainty for schools managing urgent staffing shortages. The challenge was designing a service that balanced school urgency with educator autonomy while reducing operational friction and intermediary bias. Spark Relief Teachers addressed this through a transparent real-time platform that enables schools and educators to manage staffing directly, improving booking speed, workforce visibility and continuity for students.

  • Schools needed a faster and more reliable way to secure qualified relief staff, while educators wanted greater visibility and control over work opportunities. Spark Relief Teachers responded by redesigning the staffing experience as a transparent real-time platform where schools and educators interact directly. The service evolved through continuous iteration informed by live usage, introducing features that improve booking speed, reduce operational pressure and strengthen repeat relationships between schools and educators, ultimately supporting more consistent classroom coverage for students.

  • Thanks to the cohesive design of the platform, Spark Relief Teachers enables schools, childcare centres and educators to manage relief staffing autonomously in real time, removing reliance on consultant-led coordination. Since launching in Victoria in 2022, the platform employed more than 3,500 educators, with one in three Victorian schools now holding a Spark account. The streamlined experience reduces administrative friction, improves staffing speed and transparency, and helps maintain greater continuity for students through faster classroom coverage.

  • Spark Relief Teachers uses real-time matching informed by educator availability, location, preferences, prior relationships and feedback to improve booking speed and staffing quality. Key features include “Favourite Schools” enabling trusted educators to become directly bookable by preferred schools. “School Pool” increasing educator visibility to nearby schools. “Auto-Replacement” automatically sources nearby available educators following cancellations to help schools secure urgent cover faster. “Boost” allows educators seeking additional work to increase their visibility to nearby schools. The platform continuously improves future matches by learning from repeat bookings, school preferences, travel distance, educator engagement and feedback.
