The Chilly Platter

The Chilly Platter™ responded to a genuine gap in the outdoor entertaining market. No purpose-built solution existed to keep a grazing spread chilled, fly-free, and presentable in hot outdoor conditions. The design challenge was to create a product that was functional, food-safe, and aesthetically considered, without compromising on portability or ease of use.Key constraints included selecting materials that were durable, food-safe, and thermally effective, while keeping the product simple enough for everyday use. The result had to work as hard in Darwin's tropical heat as it did on a Melbourne beach, and look good doing it.

Phoebe Rogers developed the Chilly Platter™ over six months, navigating the complexities of a multi-material product requiring precise tolerancing and a strong focus on user interaction. Stainless steel was selected for its durability, thermal conductivity, and food-safe properties, while acetate was chosen for the lid due to its clarity and durability.Key design considerations included ensuring the ice brick, insulative mat, and platter worked together as a seamless system, balancing thermal performance with ease of use. The result is intuitive to assemble, simple to use, and refined enough to serve from directly.

The Chilly Platter™ has made an immediate commercial impact, generating $70,000 in revenue within its first three months through organic demand alone, with growing retail interest and planned expansion into the North American market.From an environmental perspective, all components are recyclable on disassembly, and longevity and repairability were central design considerations, reducing the likelihood of premature disposal.Societally, the product enhances everyday shared experiences, bringing people together around food outdoors without compromise. It has quickly resonated with Australian communities, particularly in the Northern Territory where it was born.

The Chilly Platter™ is built around a removable ice brick system that sits beneath the stainless steel serving surface, keeping cheese, meats and dips chilled for up to three hours in outdoor conditions without direct contact with ice or water.An insulative mat sits beneath the ice brick, preventing the base from becoming uncomfortably cold during handling and transport. The clip-on acetate lid is transparent for presentation, airtight to keep flies out, and doubles as a seal for returning uneaten food to the refrigerator.Stainless steel was selected for its thermal conductivity, durability, food safety, and clean aesthetic. Acetate was chosen for the lid for its clarity and durability. All components are recyclable on disassembly, and the product was designed with longevity and repairability in mind.The system is simple to assemble, easy to carry, and requires no tools or technical knowledge to operate. It holds global design registration, making it the first and only purpose-built chilled grazing board on the market.
