  • Caravan travel is a core part of Australian lifestyle, with users travelling across highways, unsealed roads, and remote locations. While towable caravans are widely used, challenges remain in towing, manoeuvring, and maintaining stability under varied conditions. Off-grid touring is common, yet energy systems often require careful management and may lack sufficient capacity or integration. At the same time, users expect residential-level comfort during extended trips while maintaining durability for outdoor use. Balancing usability, stability, energy independence, and living quality within a compact towable format remains a key design challenge addressed by this project.

  • The project integrates aerodynamic form, an electrified skateboard chassis, assisted towing functions, and a high-capacity energy system into a unified caravan. The chassis supports real-time stability control to mitigate trailer sway across varied conditions. Assisted functions, including one-touch coupling/decoupling and remote parking, reduce setup complexity. A 30–85 kWh LFP battery combined with up to 2200W solar input enables extended off-grid use, supporting up to 14 days under controlled conditions. Integrated control, voice interaction, and OTA updates enhance usability and allow continuous system evolution.

  • By integrating towing assistance, chassis control, and onboard energy systems, Space Camping supports the evolution of towable caravans toward more user-friendly and energy-capable solutions. The design improves safety and reduces operational complexity, making caravan travel more accessible to a broader range of users.Enhanced off-grid capability enables longer stays in remote areas with reduced reliance on campsite infrastructure, while solar-supported energy systems contribute to more sustainable travel practices. Overall, the project enables more flexible, confident, and comfortable engagement with Australia’s diverse landscapes.

  • The caravan features an integrated smart control system that manages water, power, and onboard appliances through a unified interface, enabling seamless interaction across mobile app, central display, detachable tablet, and voice control. This system supports remote monitoring and intuitive operation, creating a connected “smart living” environment adapted for mobile use.The interior layout draws from compact hospitality design, integrating a full suite of appliances including a washing machine, induction cooktop, microwave, rangehood, water filtration system, and a large-capacity refrigerator. A queen-size bed and convertible lounge accommodate up to four adults, complemented by a separate shower and toilet with ambient lighting.Large panoramic glazing and an adjustable outdoor platform strengthen the indoor–outdoor connection, while concealed storage and transformable elements maximise space efficiency. Durable materials and integrated systems support long-term, comfortable use across varied touring conditions.
