  • The project responds to a unique industry challenge created by the evolution of the Volkswagen Transporter from T1 to T7. With Volkswagen partnering with Ford and adapting the Transit platform for the new T7, the vehicle was no longer inherently designed for camper conversions. This presented a significant design challenge, as previous Transporters were developed with “camper-ready” architecture. The brief required re-engineering the platform to meet camper-specific needs while complying with ADR standards. Additional constraints included structural integration, weight limits, and space optimisation. The project also responded to strong market anticipation, with the camping community closely observing early design solutions.

  • The design solution redefines a budget-friendly campervan by re-engineering the T7 platform into a true self-contained micro living space. Central to this was the development of an in-house pop-top fiberglass roof. The process includes cutting the original structure and introducing a unique four-stage reinforcement system to restore strength and enable upper berth functionality. A key milestone was achieving first-attempt success in torsion and beaming tests under RMS, VSB14, and LT1 criteria, despite industry setbacks. Parallel development of lightweight cabinetry, electrical, and plumbing systems ensured efficiency. The project culminated in a successful launch at Sydney’s Caravan and Camping Holiday Supershow.

  • The project delivers strong commercial, environmental, and societal impact by redefining campervan development on the T7 platform. Commercially, being first to market strengthened brand leadership and generated high customer demand. Environmentally, lightweight engineering, CNC precision manufacturing, and reduced prototyping minimise material waste and improve efficiency. Societally, the design provides a safe, certified, and accessible micro-living solution, supporting flexible travel for families, adventurers, and digital nomads. By transforming a non–camper-ready platform into a fully functional campervan, the project sets a new benchmark for innovation, engineering capability, and sustainable design thinking within the recreational vehicle industry.

  • The project’s key features focus on manufacturing efficiency and innovative space utilisation. A major advancement is the adoption of a supplier-delivered, ready-to-install pop-top unit, significantly reducing assembly time and supporting increased production demand, with over 10 vans currently booked. Internally, the design redefines spatial efficiency through first-time angled cabinetry that integrates seamlessly with swivelling front seats, maximising usable space. Additionally, a unique microwave-over-fridge configuration optimises vertical storage without compromising accessibility. We were inspired by Scandinavian design, incorporating warm, earthy tones and ambient lighting. Whether set against a snowy mountain or a sunny beach, the space offers a consistently cosy, comfortable, and affordable holiday experience. These features and innovations received strong positive feedback at Sydney’s Caravan and Camping Holiday Supershow, highlighting both functional improvement and user-centric design thinking. All these results position us and our products, as leaders in their class.
