Campbell Designed / Exo Flex Technology

Since 1957 till the present day the vast majority of surfboards built worldwide have employed a construction method and toxic materials that have remained largely unchanged. The standard surfboard today represents a fragile piece of sporting equipment at the end of its evolution that’s destined to become land-fill within a short time frame. Campbell Designed set out with the ambitious goal of creating an advanced construction technique using more environmentally friendly materials in a manner that would enhance rider enjoyment, allow for almost infinite customisation and create a more durable, hence more eco-friendly surfboard.

Campbell Designed sought to update materials starting with a core of recyclable polystyrene not the traditional polyurethane foam. As a laminating resin, eco-friendly epoxy known for its low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and higher durability was selected. For lateral strength most surfboards use a central timber stringer which Campbell Designed discarded, replaced by their own system. Exo-Flex leaf springs are a versatile stringer replacement constructed from uni-directional fibres and epoxy resin. The staggered, multi layered configuration of the springs allows the surfboard to be tailored to individual riders weight, preferred surf size and conditions, a luxury unavailable in other surfboards.

Campbell Designed's departure from traditional materials and construction techniques saw vindication upon release. From the average surfer to several multiple world champions citing Exo-Flex boards as the best they had ridden to one of our team, Ryan Campbell, taking out the Queensland Masters title, it was quite obvious that performance wise Exo-Flex had raised the bar several notches. Repairs to Campbell Designed Exo-Flex surfboards were more infrequent as were broken boards.. Perfecting of production procedures creating an economically viable product Campbell Designed customers are now able to procure a strong, lightweight surfboard to suit weight, ability and any surf conditions.
