Tapestry is a collection of 21 boutique lifestyle homes designed to fit within its culturally diverse and industrial-urban environment. It stitches itself neatly into a location where vertical living and the walkable neighbourhood are seen as a more sustainable approach to apartment design.

  • Tapestry was about promoting and dealing with the challenge of, urban densification in the right locations through more sustainable housing typologies. Small footprint living and the utilising of small infill sites that are typically seen as ‘less feasible’. With the site only 10m wide, this project is about encouraging better use of land, encouraging density on small, well-serviced sites, encouraging cycling and use of local transport, reducing car numbers (a significant reduction in cars was achieved - eight cars for 21 dwellings), enhancing the streetscape and local character.

  • Achieving 21 dwellings on a very narrow site across seven levels was a key design challenge. The apartmetns that have been designed have been highly successful in terms of amenity, outlook, operability, solar/acoustic control, minimising the impact on the environment through promoting reduced cars and increased cycling facilities. Tapestry is a prime example of quality residential design, demonstrating that small sites are in fact ‘feasible’. Within its context, Tapestry contributes to the rich and eclectic fabric that is Collingwood; yet, architecturally its language takes cues from the precinct - it doesn’t scream for attention but settles into it.

  • The development provides a robust design of high-quality housing that is available to a diverse group and demographics including singles, couples, small families and older generations. Its impactful design utilises the buildings quality materials in a low key, but an aesthetically composed way. Allowing a small community to thrive in an incredibly well-serviced location: walking distance to trams, buses, trains, established shopping precinct and smaller local stores immediately in and around the site; proximity to schools, education facilities, places of cultural interest and parklands

  • The significant reduction in car parking. Nine cars provided for 21 residences (statutory requirement for a minimum of 26 car spaces). Supported due: to 98 out of 100 score for walkability! ‘Walkers Paradise’ category; proximity to tram/bus/train networks; connection to major cycling routes; numerous car share options; provision of 23 bicycle spaces on site (stat requirement for only 4 spaces).Tapestry includes a unique configuration whereby four lightcourts penetrate the entire height of the building. Impressively, all 21 units can be fully cross ventilated – rare for most apartment buildings.
