  • Forming one of 75 development sites in the Victorian Government-led Level Crossing Removal Project, the redesign of Reservoir Station presented significant opportunities to greatly improve commuter safety and reduce traffic congestion to and through the station. The previous on-grade station and surrounding complex main road intersections effectively cut-in-half Reservoir's two high streets - Edwardes St and Broadway. The objective was to create a new transport precinct that accommodates for the growing community along the rail corridor, creating a destination with lasting environmental legacies including increased biodiversity, water management solutions, and active transport access.

  • The Reservoir Level Crossing Removal Project removed the Level Crossing at the congested, dangerous intersection by elevating the railway line over the road via rail bridge. The wholistic Architectural, Urban Design, and Landscape (McGregor Coxall) solution entailed: - Demolition of old Reservoir station and construction of a new station precinct - Rail infrastructure and road works to separate the rail line - Urban design and public realm works that connect community and commerciality - Upgrades to Shared User Pathways encouraging active transport solutions - Upgraded bus interchange for enhanced multimodal transport connections - Ecological and visual amenity enhancements through native landscaping

  • Giving back to community, Reservoir Station is designed with a responsibility to the social and environmental context. Sustainability initiatives including rainwater storage and metering, native planting strategy, and use of recycled glass sands within concrete saw the project achieve a 5 Star GreenStar Design Rating, a first in Australia. The prominent floating screen promotes civic pride, becoming an iconic centrepiece for the suburb that is uniquely 'Reservoir'. The new central ground level public plaza unifies the retail precinct, enhancing pedestrian activation and increasing commercial opportunities for the local small businesses, while also improving safe access to and through the station.

  • -Received a 5 Star GreenStar Design Rating by GBCA (first station in Australia) -Received the highest 'Leading' rating (89 points) for the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) As Built rating for outstanding sustainable design and construction practices. -Reduced consumption of operational water use (by 92%) and electricity (by 41%) -Improved active transport amenities providing 108 bike storage spaces (400% increase) and east-west retail precincts connections through civic plaza -Used responsibly sourced steel and reduced Portland cement content in concrete -Improved green space and visual amenity through native landscaping (32% enhancement to ecology) -Pursued Victorian first sustainability innovations, including trial of recycled glass fines in concrete, remote energy and water monitoring, and material saving Monopile substructure design ($4.2M cost savings, 1123.7m3 and 250 tonnes of reinforcing steel saved) -Day-to-day operations 100% electric -Contextualised material selection, such as the rippled elevated screen, as well as the hardscaped ground plane inspired by the brown brick inter-ware and post-ware Architecture typical of Reservoir
