The design of this home was guided by two core principles: a thoughtful response to the environment and a pursuit of elegant simplicity. Nestled on a windswept hillside, we sought to create a home that seamlessly integrated with its surroundings while standing independently as an architectural statement.

  • The first challenge was to address the prevailing winds that run up the hill from the ocean. The client desired unobstructed views and protection from prevailing winds. The other primary consideration was in regard to the program of the house, as it needed to be flexible in the nature and size of entertaining, whilst also maintaining a clear and definable internal zoning to allow separation of functions internally. Architecturally the most significant challenge of the project centred around the solid concrete roof. Balancing the design of the proposed eave and roof profile, with the significant structural requirements.

  • The initial design concept was proposed as a single-story X-shaped structure, creating outdoor pockets sheltered by the primary building form. This design ensured uninterrupted ocean views through the main pavilion, whilst also fostering a constant connection to the outside from the other spaces. The concrete roof was the most significant design challenge to achieve the beautiful aesthetic, maintaining its integrity, but also achieving the detail and 3.5m cantilever structurally. This was made possible through close collaboration with builder, concreter and structural engineer.

  • Simplicity was at the forefront of the design of this home. We developed the concept of a ”flying roof”, comprising two overlapping solid concrete roofs. The result is a home that the clients absolutely love living in, enhancing their quality of life. We are incredibly proud of this project as a practice. The scale of the building is incredible. The solid concrete roof spans over a 1400m2 footprint, which is impossibly to appreciate from the imagery. The sheer scale and length of the eaves is breathtaking.

  • The decision to position the house slightly lower than the site’s crest was a strategic choice. This placement allowed integration with the landscape, and meant the home didn’t sit proud to the natural topography. Simplicity was at the forefront of the home’s concept. We developed the concept of a ”flying roof,” comprising two overlapping solid concrete roofs. These roofs cantilever 2.5 meters along the perimeter of the home, and extend to 3.5 meters at the corners. The soffit of the roof then tapers up to a 100mm bullnose. This detail gives the roof a sense of lightness. To minimize environmental impact, we proposed siting the new home at the same level as the previous home. This approach aimed to preserve the existing natural surroundings. All earth-moving activities on the property utilized on-site soil, with no importation or removal of additional soil. Seamless integration into the landscape was of great importance, and close collaboration with the landscape architect facilitated a smooth transition from the house to the garden and then to the untouched landscape beyond.
