Some cordless vacuum cleaners use small motors that can be weak, others rely on heavy motors that compromise versatility.

The Dyson digital motor V8 is both compact and powerful, offering a 110,000rpm spin, impressive fade-free suction, increased runtime, hygienic dirt ejection and less noise all weighing just 2.6kg.

  • The Dyson digital motor V8 spins at up to 110,000rpm. Powered by new fade-free nickel-cobalt-aluminium batteries, it delivers more power over a longer runtime. When on max mode, the Dyson V8 Cord-free vacuum offers higher suction for more difficult tasks, & is activated with a more intuitive new switch, providing 115AW of suction. Updating the motor took approximately 18 months of research & development work. Approx. 500,000 hours of testing was carried out on the new motor's different designs and parts, with 60-120 motors running in Dyson test labs at any given time. 376 robots are used to assemble Dyson digital motors, as even the most dextrous human hand isn't precise enough: the smallest manufacturing tolerance is +/- 3 microns, which is approximately a quarter of the thickness of a human hair. (1) Suction test based on IEC 60312-1, 5.8 and 5.9 loaded to bin full.

  • Weighing just 2.6kg, the Dyson V8 Cord-free vacuum cleaner doesn't just clean the floor, but quickly transforms between handheld and stick modes to clean down low, up high and everywhere in-between. Inside Dyson Cord-free vacuums, key components like the motor and battery are positioned near the hand. This shifts the centre of gravity, making the cleaning end of the vacuum much lighter, so it's easy to clean up top and down below.

  • Dyson engineers have developed significant acoustic improvements to Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums: they generate 50% less noise compared to previous generation machines, without any compromise on suction power. The air flow paths through the machine have been reworked, to reduce the noise associated with air moving fast through tight spaces. The post-motor filter has been redesigned, so it helps to muffle sound. And acoustic felt and closed cell foam inside the machine absorbs vibrations, also reducing noise.

  • To enable the hygienic dirt ejection mechanism, which drives out trapped dust and debris in the same action as emptying the bin, Dyson engineers had to redesign the shroud. The shroud in previous generation machines was constructed from a fine mesh, but a silicon collar would have left dust behind as it slid down a mesh shroud. Therefore, the shroud in the Dyson V8 Cord-free machines is constructed from chemically etched stainless steel, which has a smooth surface punctuated by approximately 15,000 holes that are 0.4mm in diameter.

The direct-drive cleaner head has a powerful motor located inside the brush bar. This drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet pile to remove ground-in dirt and pet hair, while there are also soft anti-static carbon fibre filaments to remove fine dust from hard floors. The cleaner head offers 150% more brush bar power than the previous Dyson V6 Cord-free Animal motorised head. The soft-roller cleaner head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously. A larger roller covered in soft woven nylon traps large debris, whilst anti-static carbon fibre filaments remove fine dust. A direct-drive motor sits within the roller, allowing full-width, edge to edge cleaning. Both cleaner heads are low profile, for reaching under furniture, and feature a swivel neck that pivots to reach into awkward places with a turn of the wrist.
