Enabling faster, more accessible delivery at scale, it transforms how millions of Australians experience banking – making it feel effortless, more consistent, intuitive, and refreshingly simple in a world that’s often not.

  • When CommBank unveiled its bold new brand identity with a lighter, more energetic visual direction, our existing digital design system couldn't easily adapt to the change. This resulted in a fragmented, inconsistent and outdated experience - reflecting a more traditional past. With 8.8 million users logging in an average of 43 times a month, we needed a system that could scale, adapt and bring the new branding to life digitally. The challenge was to rebuild from the ground up - modernising legacy foundations, aligning platforms, and creating a flexible, accessible, future-fit design system that empowers teams and delivers seamless, world-class banking experiences.

  • We began with a clear mission: to replace outdated, inconsistent digital experiences with a seamless, accessible design system that’s distinctly CommBank. Built to scale, it empowers teams to deliver more consistent, high-quality experiences for over 8.8 million users. The modernised design is light, bright, simple, dynamic and inclusive - evoking optimism, confidence and purpose. More than a visual refresh, it's a foundational system that unifies digital design across platforms, bringing the brand to life in a cohesive, modern way that truly feels like CommBank.

  • CommBank’s Digital Design System enables teams to design and build with greater consistency, efficiency and confidence. Comprised of 100+ components and multiple features shipped, it ensures accessibility (WCAG AA), brand alignment, and scalability across all digital platforms. Though still early in its rollout, it’s already improved design cohesion and reduced duplication. Nearly half of CommBank app users report an improved look and feel, reflecting a clearer, more modern experience. The system has fast become a key foundation of delivering exceptional banking experiences for our customers.

More than a toolkit, it's a unified system connecting design, engineering and product teams to deliver consistent, accessible digital experiences at scale. Accessibility is embedded from the ground up. Informed by the needs of millions of Australians - especially those living with disabilities or varied access needs - every component meets WCAG AA standards. From accessible colour tokens, to semantic markup, keyboard navigation and assistive tech compatibility, inclusivity is fundamental, not an afterthought. With over 100 production-ready components integrated across web and native platforms, the system drives speed, quality and consistency. A collaborative cross-disciplinary contribution model ensures it evolves continuously, reflecting real user needs. This approach has streamlined workflows, reduced duplication and enhanced alignment across CommBank’s evolving digital ecosystem. By embedding accessibility and craft at its core, the design system sets a new standard for scalable, inclusive digital banking and lays a strong foundation for ongoing innovation.
