Creative direction and visual identity for Bastion Festival 2026- a music and arts festival in Mallacoota, Victoria. The festival emerged from the 2020 Mallacoota bushfires in an effort to revitalise community spirit and foster local collaborations. The aim for 2026 was reinvigorating the visual identity with a sense of place.

  • Born from the 2020 Mallacoota bushfires, Bastion Festival was started in an effort to revitalise community spirit, foster local collaborations and breathe life back into a town that had been beaten down by a brutal fire season. Approaching its fourth edition, the festival’s visual identity was missing a true sense of connection to place and community. The designs for 2026 needed to speak to the regenerating landscape and biodiversity of Mallacoota, as well as resonate with the local community. Bastion was unable to attain government funding in 2026, so the festival was running on budget limitations.

  • EAR Studio travelled to Mallacoota to gain insight into its unique flora and fauna and engage with local community groups. The team met with a group of students from the Mallacoota Prep-12 school who were running a social enterprise in conjunction with Bastion Festival. These lively discussions aligned early concepts and ensured the visual identity reflected community voice. The EAR team also collected endemic plant clippings with the guidance of a former local ranger, which were used to create a series of eco-prints. These sustainably made eco-prints formed the backbone of the 2026 festival identity, directly referencing Mallacoota’s natural history.

  • The major impact of the Bastion 2026 visual identity was its ability to reconnect the festival with the local community. By involving local students in the concepting process and meeting key community members from Mallacoota who assisted in understanding the place and its history, EAR Studio was able to promote a sense of connection to Bastion Festival before it had even taken place. The well-researched concept and executions helped Bastion reach beyond local audiences to gain their largest festival attendance to date. By featuring endemic plants in the visual identity, the Bastion team’s environmental awareness was transformed into commercial success.
