  • The Australian National Maritime Museum needed a clearer strategic direction for its digital experience, content and audience engagement. While the museum holds significant collections, expertise and stories, its digital ecosystem had to work harder to connect these assets with diverse audiences before, during and after a visit. The challenge was to define a practical future state that could support institutional priorities, improve access to content, strengthen public engagement and guide investment decisions. The strategy also needed to balance ambition with operational realities, helping teams align around a shared vision that could be implemented progressively across channels, platforms and workflows.

  • The solution was developed through a collaborative strategy process combining stakeholder engagement, audience insight, digital ecosystem review and future-state definition. Key moments included aligning leadership around strategic objectives, mapping current content and channel challenges, identifying audience needs across the visitor journey and translating opportunities into a practical roadmap. The strategy reframed digital as more than a website, positioning it as a connected experience layer across discovery, learning, visitation and ongoing engagement. Roadblocks included differing internal priorities, legacy systems and capacity constraints, which were addressed through clear principles, phased recommendations and an achievable pathway for implementation.

  • The strategy positions the Australian National Maritime Museum to become a more connected, accessible and influential cultural institution. It turns digital from a support channel into a driver of reach, relevance and resilience, helping grow audiences, strengthen visitation, unlock new value from content and inspire greater public understanding of Australia’s oceans, waterways and maritime future.

  • Key features include a deeply collaborative, co-designed strategy process that brought museum teams into the work from the outset. Rather than creating an abstract digital vision, the strategy was shaped around organisational readiness, internal capability, resource constraints and practical delivery pathways. This ensured the recommendations could be embedded into the museum’s culture, not sit outside it. The work balances ambition with pragmatism, helping the museum respond to an AI-enabled, digitally distributed future while remaining achievable within its current operating environment. Its strength lies in giving teams a shared direction they can understand, own and progressively deliver.
