Associate Professor Selby Coxon is the inaugural director of the MADA hosted, Mobility Design Lab. His career spans thirty years in professional industrial design, research and higher education, most of which have been in leadership positions. Selby has wide interests in the mobility design space especially strategies to which design can enhance the passenger experience of public and active transport. He spent six months embedded with the French national railway (SNCF) during an Outside Studies Period, where he investigated design interventions to mitigate the effects of anti-social behaviour and improve passenger boarding and alighting dispersal. He is currently a Chief Investigator in the Smart Pavements ARC Transformation Hub and also the ARC funded Net-Zero Precincts research project amongst other research programs. Selby is the principle author of the book Urban Mobility Design published by Elsevier and co-editor of Advancing a Design Approach to Enriching Public Mobility published by Springer. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s award for research excellence and a nominee for both undergraduate teaching and post graduate supervision. He has undertaken two terms as the Acting Head, Department of Design and serves on a number of faculty and University committees and boards. He became Associate Dean, Graduate Studies for MADA in December 2019.
