POPIT is an Australian company establishing a new global benchmark in the recycling of High-Density-Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic milk bottles. Through its innovative recovery and recycling system, POPIT has overcome longstanding barriers to be the first to produce food-grade recycled HDPE at price parity with virgin resin.

  • Food-grade recycled High-Density-Polyethylene (HDPE) has long remained commercially unviable, limiting potential value-recovery from recyclable milk bottles. In Australia alone, milk bottle production consumes 60,000 tonnes of virgin plastic annually. POPIT aimed to overcome longstanding economic and logistical barriers precluding the use of recycled HDPE in milk bottle production. KEY CHALLENGES:- Traditional recycling requires large-scale infrastructure & high capital investment- Recycled HDPE typically 40% more costly than virgin material- High contamination risk- Only ~40% of HDPE plastic bottles recovered- Significant volume goes to landfill- Most recycled HDPE is down-cycled into low-value plastic products

  • Designed and manufactured in Australia, POPIT has developed a fully integrated milk bottle recovery and closed-loop recycling solution, for the first-time delivering food-grade recycled HDPE at price parity with virgin resin. At its core is a modular recycling system engineered to convert recovered milk bottles into hot-washed flake. The intelligent system accepts unwashed plastic milk bottles and can sort, wash, shred, dry and package in one continuous process. The outcome is clean plastic flakes ready for transformation into new HDPE pellets.POPIT offers a significantly more cost-effective solution than traditional recycling, with a substantially smaller footprint.

  • By compressing industrial-scale recycling into a compact, integrated system and pairing it with intelligent logistics, POPIT has broken the longstanding economic barrier: food-grade recycled HDPE at price parity with virgin material.Immediate environmental benefits are realised by reducing the reliance on oil-based virgin plastic while significantly diverting waste from landfill.Dairy companies with in-house bottle manufacturing can integrate key recycling stages within their moulding facilities, enabling true closed-loop recycling. A unique bottle-and-crate recovery model delivers shared economic benefit to both dairies and food-business clients.POPIT makes a positive statement promoting the confluence of sustainable practice and economic benefit.

  • Recycling HDPE milk bottles presents several significant challenges that limit true circularity. These obstacles primarily stem from the difficulty of maintaining material purity at a cost competitive with virgin plastic.- Collection and sorting- Contamination- Food residue- Labels and adhesives- Large-scale recycling infrastructureA defining feature of POPIT’s system is its dedicated Take-Back recovery model. Dairy companies typically manufacture their own bottles on-site and distribute milk in reusable crates to food-service businesses such as cafés, restaurants, and food producers.POPIT addresses collection and sorting issues by collecting empty bottles in their original crates and returning them directly to the originating dairy. This approach bypasses commingled municipal and private recycling streams, significantly reducing contamination risks.POPIT’s key innovation is the integration of the entire recycling process into a modular, continuous system. The system intelligently sorts, washes, shreds, dries, and packages material within a single streamlined workflow. Its compact design enables installation directly at dairy in-house moulding facilities, ensuring enhanced control, traceability, and material quality.Compared to conventional HDPE recycling systems, POPIT offers substantial commercial advantages unmatched by any other recycling solution:- 10× Lower capital investment- 10× Smaller footprint
